Andrew Flintoff Moves Josh Hull’s Mother to Tears with First Speech

England great Andrew Flintoff moved the mother of debutant Josh Hull to tears with an emotional speech on the first day of the third Test against Sri Lanka.

Hull, 20, was selected at the Kia Oval after just 10 first-class appearances, with England keen on his 6ft 7in frame and left-arm angle as they look to add variety to their bowling attack.

Newcomers to the team are traditionally welcomed with a cap presentation before the match and fan favourite and former Test captain Flintoff did the honours.

Flintoff, who joined the backroom team as a batting consultant, spoke from the heart as members of Hull’s family joined the team huddle and even brought a tear to the eye of Hull’s mother, Antonia.

“I have the incredible opportunity to present a Test cap today. It’s something I don’t take lightly,” Flintoff said.

“It’s so nice to have the family here to show that too, because I’m a parent myself and I know how much you do for your kids. Driving them everywhere and taking them places, but also the stress of watching your kids play. I hope you have a great week this week watching your son play for England.

“This cap represents so many things. Firstly, Test cricket. Josh, you are now going to play a game unlike any other. It tests your ability, your character and your personality.

“From what we’ve seen so far, you have those things in abundance. This is a great time to be joining a team, everyone here in this group wants you to succeed and when challenges arise, they will be there for you and help you overcome them.

“Every time you wear this cap, you will be filled with pride and feel invincible. As an old guy, you will look back and say to yourself that this is the best part of your life. Enjoy it and show everything that you are.”
