SOMERSET young wicketkeeper and batsman Thomas Rew has been named captain of the England men’s Under-19 team for the upcoming Youth ODI tri-series against Scotland and Ireland at Loughborough.
Thomas, who attends King’s College Taunton and plays club cricket for Taunton St Andrews, is just 16.
He played in the Somerset Pathway age groups and is currently at the Academy.
Thomas made his debut for Somerset Second XI at the start of the 2023 season and earlier this summer he played for England Under-19s in their third youth international against Sri Lanka Under-19s at Hove.
The Somerset youngster will lead a Young Lions squad that includes just three other capped players: Harry Moore, Sebastian Morgan and Alex Green.
Series Head Coach Richard Halsall said: “It has been really exciting to see the development of the Under-19s this summer.
“We have seen a large part of the squad from the Sri Lanka series continue to play first-team cricket and this gives us an opportunity to expose more young players to international cricket in this series.
“I am really looking forward to taking over the reins of the Yards team as coach.
“We know we will have to be competitive from the first ball against Ireland and Scotland and I look forward to seeing the team showcase their skills in this series.”
