Two-time Olympic pole vault champion Duplantis never let go of his lead after exploding to beat 400m hurdles world record holder Warholm in 10.37 seconds.
Norwegian Warholm clocked a personal best time of 10.47 seconds in the race, dubbed the “100m to Settle Everything” by joint organisers Weltklasse Zurich, Puma and Red Bull.
Duplantis said afterwards: “I’m pretty excited. How could you not be, I mean, come on! Stop playing!”
Warholm added: “I have to admit that Mondo is the best. He beat me fair and square today. It was a great race. He started really fast. Congratulations, man!”
Sweden’s Duplantis demonstrated his natural speed in Wednesday night’s challenge ahead of Thursday’s penultimate Wanda Diamond League meeting at the same venue.
The two close friends have been arguing over who is faster over 100m since Warholm commented on Duplantis’ speed on the pole vault track during a practice session more than a year ago.
Duplantis then challenged Warholm to a race and fans’ anticipation grew on social media.
Warholm grimaced when Duplantis handed him a Swedish running vest and recalled the loser’s forfeit, which is to wear it in his 400m hurdles race at the Diamond League meeting tomorrow.
